Badgerland Striders Half Marathon

I’d be lying to tell you I didn’t feel a certain anxiousness going into today race. I was only three weeks post 50 miler and my feet have not been the same. I still am losing large patches of skin from my blisters. I’ve noticed my running form hasn’t been perfect. I’m not really sure mentally how I felt about running a race again. But, come race morning my anxiety had disappeared. Giving the stress of the 50 miler I decided to take things a little easier and participate with my mother going at her pace. Looking at the weather forecast I realized it was going to be pretty mild in the low 70s. Not a super hot race, but not cool either.

It was still shorts running weather to me, unless it’s below 50 degrees I typically wear shorts. Although it was starting to get a little cooler in the early morning. I wore my warm up stuff over my shorts. We made a quick bathroom stop and went through my pre race warm up. Got in the starting line and off we went. From participating in the past I know to relax in the beginning of this race. It’s a bit crowded in the beginning and if you try to worry to much about getting ahead of people you’ll waste a lot of valuable energy. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way in the past. We made our way around the first loop of the park without a hitch. Surprisingly my body felt pretty good no foot pain and legs didn’t feel heavy. I didn’t feel clunky maybe I had started to recover more.

Around we went for the second loop and out on the oak leaf trail. I also feel like running down to the art museum you are going slightly downhill, which make the first 7 miles go by really fast. I kept my everyone in check to stay on top of hydration and food. We got to the turn around point and made our way back up to the biergarten it was starting to warm up ant the heat was getting to me but we were close to the finish line. We got into a good run/ walk pattern and forged on. We finished the race!

Now time to enjoy the post race party! I would have to admit this is one of my favorite post race celebrations. I was especially excited to hear that the Bolzen Beer Band was back- they describe themselves as a punk rock polka band. They also serve a fantastic breakfast at Estabrook Park of scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, and cinnamon bread. The best part is the unlimited Hofbrau Beer. The race also had a great medal and shirt design this year. You can’t beat the value in this race $29 for a Badgerland Striders Member or $42 for a Non-Member. This race is top on my yearly race list and I’ll be back next year hopefully with more recovered legs.
